Virtual Work Experience 
Quick Start Guide

The aim of these sessions is to give you a basic understanding of the career and pathways into the NHS job role you choose below. 

There will be quizzes, tasks and videos to watch in each session, and it will take you approximately 1 hour to complete.

Once you have selected the role you want to explore below you will be asked to complete a form to access your chosen session. Once you submit the form you will be given a code to enter the Virtual Work Experience site – Nearpod.

Catering

Chefs and cooks are responsible for cooking food in NHS hospitals and other services making sure our patients and staff have highly nutritious, high quality food. 

Communications & PR

Communications and public relations (PR) staff help NHS organisations engage with patients, their local communities, staff and other interested groups including the media. 

Facilities & Estates

As part of the estates and facilities team, you’ll look after NHS buildings and the grounds. You’ll also make sure that medicines, goods and patients are where they need to be so care is received at the right time and the right place.  

Medicine

Nursing

Nurses observe patients and assess their needs. You’ll learn to plan and deliver the most appropriate care for them, and evaluate the results. Building a trusting relationship with each patient is essential. Your aim is to improve your patients’ quality of life, whatever their situation. 

Occupational Therapist

As an occupational therapist, you’ll help people who have difficulties carrying out day-to-day activities because of a disability, illness, trauma, ageing, and a range of long-term conditions.

Prosthetist & Orthotist 

Paramedicine

As a paramedic, you’ll often be one of the first to arrive when a patient needs help. It’s a fast-paced and vital role where you’ll need to quickly take charge of the situation to save lives.

Physiotherapy

Speech & Language Therapy

Speech and language therapists provide life-changing treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, eating, drinking and swallowing. You’ll help people who, for physical or psychological reasons, have problems speaking and communicating.

Radiography

Neonatal and Maternity

Neonatal and maternity roles involve caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, as well as for newborn babies who require specialised attention. Key roles include Midwives who provide comprehensive care throughout the pregnancy and birth journey.
