What jobseekers want

Tips for writing job adverts
A job advert and a job description are two different documents. A job advert needs to engage an audience by being visually appealing, outlining the desired experience/ qualifications, presenting a positive organisation culture and with a clear call to action. In essence it’s a hook and the job description comes later.
- Strong branding, the advert is your “shop window” Better to have no logo than a grainy one.
- Generic job titles and clear language. Avoid buzzwords and acronyms. Most jobseekers spend less than a minute reviewing an advert and 64% of jobseekers move on within 20 seconds if they have not understood what it’s about.
- Avoid the advert being text heavy and listing a number of activities and requirements like a shopping list. Job seekers like visual, they really like video.
- Write in the first person and use language to trigger emotion – “you will be supported to undertake training to fulfil your role”.
- Are there aspirational outcomes? Does the advert hint at progression and longevity? If training is included, mention it.
- Include salary and benefit ranges. It’s a self-selecting tool for job seekers and adverts without remuneration details receive 35% less applications.
- Values. Job seekers look for alignment in their personal values and those of their employer. If one of your values is “collaboration” refer to it in the advert “working as part of a multi-skilled team”.
- D&I – Jobseekers look for inclusive employers, if this role can be part time, mention it.
- Consider and research broadcast channels. LinkedIn rarely works for early careers, but Facebook does.
- Simple signposting to progress. Ideally one click followed by a touch-point. An engaging advert that sends an EOI to a clunky careers site or application form will lose 40% of EOIs across the board, more in non-technical job seekers.
