Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB are committed to implementing and building on The People Promise which is helping to create more supportive, inclusive and rewarding workplaces for NHS staff.

For the past three years, the People Promise Exemplar Programme has been supporting NHS teams to bring to life what matters most to staff in their day-to-day work. The People Promise was created by staff, for staff. It focuses on seven key areas that make the NHS a great place to work and ensure every colleague feels valued and supported:

  • Compassionate and inclusive
  • Recognised and rewarded
  • Having a voice that counts
  • Safe and healthy
  • Always learning
  • Working flexibly
  • We are a team

This is a collaborative movement designed to make a real difference. When we work together, we can create workplaces where people feel happy, valued, supported and proud to belong – leading to tangible improvements in staff experience and patient care.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB is committed to improving employee experience across primary care, this can be complimented by the below initiatives:

GP Staff Survey

The General Practice Staff Survey (GPSS) aims to give a voice to staff working in general practice organisations because their voice counts. The survey will help develop an understanding of their experience of working in general practice, which will in turn will support improvements to working experience and ultimately attraction and retention of staff.

The NHS has conducted an annual staff survey for more than 20 years across many NHS organisations, including ICBs and acute providers. However, since 2023 this has been extended to include general practice with HIOW ICB participating in the voluntary rollout of the general practice survey from 2024.

The GPSS is run independently by Picker (the only approved NHS England (NHSE) contractor to provide NHS Staff Survey services) to the highest standards of quality and accuracy. Responses are kept confidential and anonymous and are only analysed and aggregated by Picker,  ensuring no individual is identifiable.

Focus on Flex

NHS Employers in Hampshire and Isle of Wight are committed to enabling flexible working for all staff.  Working flexibly helps employees to thrive in their roles, and to be better able to balance work with life outside work. This is important for wellbeing and is one way that demonstrates how staff are valued as individuals. Setting up flexible working can be challenging, there is a toolkit available and this needs to be proactively shared across general practices and PCNs.
